India’s largest airline IndiGo will increase fuel charges on both domestic and international flights as rising aviation turbine fuel costs put pressure on operating expenses.
The airline announced the revised charges on October 5, with the increase varying according to the route and type of travel. The move is expected to raise the fuel-related amount paid by passengers booking IndiGo flights.
Fuel charges on IndiGo’s domestic routes will rise by between 375 rupees and 1,300 rupees, depending on the flight.
The airline has introduced the higher charges as the cost of aviation turbine fuel, commonly known as ATF, has increased. Fuel is one of the largest operating expenses for airlines, making changes in fuel prices an important factor in ticket pricing.
Passengers travelling on domestic flights will therefore see higher fuel-related charges included in their fares.
International routes will also see a rise in fuel charges. IndiGo said the increase will range from 1,000 rupees to 10,000 rupees.
The amount will vary based on the international route. Longer flights generally require more fuel, meaning fuel-related costs can have a significant effect on airline operations.
The revised charges apply as IndiGo responds to higher aviation fuel costs across its network.

ATF prices directly affect the cost of operating commercial flights. Airlines have to account for fuel expenses when setting fares, along with costs such as aircraft maintenance, airport fees, crew expenses and other operational requirements.
When fuel prices rise, airlines can face higher costs even when passenger demand and other expenses remain unchanged. Fuel surcharges or fuel charges allow carriers to recover part of that additional expense through passenger fares.
IndiGo’s latest decision shows how changes in fuel costs can quickly affect the price of air travel in India and on international routes.
The revised fuel charges mean passengers may pay more for IndiGo tickets, although the overall fare will depend on the route, booking date, seat availability and other applicable charges.
The airline operates a large domestic network and an expanding international network, making fuel prices an important part of its overall cost structure.
For travellers planning upcoming flights, the higher fuel component could increase the final ticket price compared with earlier bookings. IndiGo’s decision also highlights the continuing impact of aviation fuel costs on airlines and passengers.
