American Airlines Resumes Flights After IT Outage Causes Nationwide Ground Stop

American Airlines resumed flight operations across the United States after a temporary nationwide ground stop caused by an information technology (IT) issue disrupted departures on Tuesday evening.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) issued the ground stop at approximately 6:30 p.m. ET, preventing American Airlines and its regional carriers from departing while technical teams worked to resolve the problem. The restriction was lifted around 7:18 p.m. ET after the airline restored its systems.

IT Issue Temporarily Grounds Flights

The airline confirmed that flight operations restarted shortly after the technical issue was resolved.

In a statement, American Airlines said its systems had returned online and flights were departing again. The carrier apologized to passengers for the inconvenience caused by the temporary disruption.

The airline said the precautionary ground stop was implemented to ensure safe operations while engineers addressed the IT problem.

More Than 1,100 Flights Delayed

The outage resulted in widespread disruptions across the airline's network.

According to flight-tracking platform FlightAware, American Airlines delayed approximately 1,100 flights, representing about 30% of its scheduled operations on Tuesday. The airline also canceled 221 flights, or roughly 6% of its schedule.

Another flight-tracking service, Flightradar24, reported that around 130 fewer American Airlines flights were airborne at one point compared with the same time a week earlier.

Weather Also Contributed to Delays

The IT outage occurred while several airports along the U.S. East Coast were already experiencing operational challenges due to thunderstorms.

Weather-related ground stops and delays compounded the impact of the technical disruption, creating additional scheduling challenges for passengers and airline operations.

Airline Operations Return to Normal

Following the restoration of its systems, American Airlines resumed departures nationwide and continues working to return flight schedules to normal.

Passengers affected by delays or cancellations are advised to check their flight status before traveling, as some residual disruptions may continue while the airline clears the backlog of delayed aircraft.
