Elon Musk Plans Giant Tesla Chip Factory, Considers Working With Intel

Post by : Sameer Saifi

Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla, has announced a bold new plan for the future of the company. He said Tesla may need to build a very large chip factory to create special computer chips that will power the company’s self-driving cars and robots. These chips are needed for advanced artificial intelligence systems.

Musk also said that Tesla might work with Intel, a big American chip company. He said, “We have not signed any deal, but talking to Intel is worth exploring.” When Musk made this comment, Intel’s stock price rose because investors see this as a positive opportunity for Intel.

Right now, chipmakers like Nvidia lead the AI chip market. Their chips are powerful but very expensive. Musk wants Tesla to make a new type of AI chip that costs much less and uses much less power. According to him, these chips could cost only one-tenth of Nvidia’s top chip and use much less electricity.

Tesla is currently using its fourth-generation AI chips in its cars. Musk said the fifth-generation chip, called AI5, will start being made in small numbers in 2026. Large-scale production will likely happen in 2027. He also said that a future chip, called AI6, could be ready by 2028.

Tesla already works with big chip manufacturers like TSMC in Taiwan and Samsung in South Korea. But Musk says those companies alone cannot make enough chips for Tesla’s future needs. That is why building a new, massive Tesla chip factory, which Musk called a “terafab,” may be necessary. “It has to be huge, much bigger than a gigafactory,” he explained.

However, Musk did not say where the factory would be built, how much it will cost, or how it will be funded. Chip factories are extremely expensive and hard to build. They require advanced technology, pure materials, and highly skilled workers.

At the same meeting, Tesla shareholders also approved a $1 trillion pay package for Musk. This shows that investors support his long-term vision of transforming Tesla from just an electric car company into a leader in AI, technology, and robotics.

In simple words, Musk wants Tesla to control its own future. Instead of depending on other companies for chips, Tesla wants to make its own. If successful, Tesla could move faster in developing self-driving cars and robots.

But experts say this is a very big challenge. Building a chip factory takes time, money, and specialized knowledge. The world will now watch if Musk can turn this idea into reality—just like he did with electric cars and reusable rockets.
