US Approves $330 Million Fighter Jet Parts Sale to Taiwan

Post by : Sameer Saifi

The United States has approved the sale of fighter jet parts to Taiwan for $330 million, the Pentagon said on Thursday. This is the first such arms transaction under President Donald Trump’s administration.

The Pentagon said the sale will help Taiwan keep its fighter jets, transport planes, and other aircraft ready for current and future threats. This includes F-16 fighter jets and C-130 transport planes.

The United States does not have formal diplomatic ties with Taiwan but maintains unofficial relations. It is also Taiwan’s most important arms supplier. Under U.S. law, Washington must provide Taiwan with the tools to defend itself.

Taiwan’s defense ministry said the sale is expected to take effect within a month. The ministry said the parts will help keep fighter jets ready, strengthen air defenses, and improve Taiwan’s ability to respond to Chinese military actions in nearby waters and skies. These activities by China are called “gray-zone” operations because they put pressure on Taiwan without leading to open conflict.

China claims Taiwan as its territory and has not ruled out using force to control the island. Taiwan strongly rejects this claim, saying only its people can decide their future.

The arms sale comes after a recent meeting between Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping in South Korea. There were concerns in Taipei that Taiwan’s interests might be compromised, but the sale shows continued U.S. support for Taiwan’s defense.
