Three Firms Chosen for DMRC Electrification Contract D2E-12 Phase-4

Three Firms Chosen for DMRC Electrification Contract D2E-12 Phase-4

Post by : Meena Rani

The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has moved one step forward in its Phase-4 expansion project by selecting three firms for an important electrification contract. This contract, named D2E-12, is linked to two major routes – the new Line-10 from Aerocity to Tughlakabad and the extension of Line-5 from Inderlok to Indraprastha.

This decision is an important part of the larger plan to expand the metro system across the capital city. The Delhi Metro has become the backbone of daily travel for millions of people, and Phase 4 is expected to bring better access and reduce traffic jams on roads.

The Contract and Its Importance

The electrification work under Contract D2E-12 will ensure that trains on the new sections of Line-10 and Line-5 get the required electricity supply. Modern metro trains run on high-voltage electricity through overhead equipment (OHE), which is a system of wires and poles installed above the tracks. Without proper electrification, the tracks remain incomplete, and trains cannot run.

This contract covers the design, supply, installation, testing, and commissioning of the overhead equipment. The electricity supply will be provided at 25 kilovolts (kV) alternating current, which is the standard system used for metro trains in Delhi.

The project is worth ₹33.22 crores, and the time given for completion is 36 months, or about three years.

Details of the Metro Routes Covered

Line-10: Aerocity to Tughlakabad

  • This new line will stretch for about 23.6 kilometers.

  • It will have 15 stations connecting important residential, commercial, and business areas.

  • Some of the stations will serve crowded neighborhoods, giving people faster and safer travel options.

Line-10 is expected to ease travel in South Delhi, especially for people traveling between the airport region (Aerocity) and the densely populated Tughlakabad area. Once completed, it will also provide better connections to other existing metro lines.

Line-5 Extension: Inderlok to Indraprastha

  • This extension will be 12.58 kilometers long.

  • It will include 10 stations.

  • The new stretch will improve east-west connectivity, linking Inderlok in the west to Indraprastha in central Delhi.

This extension is especially important for office-goers and daily commuters who now rely heavily on buses or personal vehicles. With the metro line extended, people will have a smoother option for travel without being stuck in heavy traffic.

The Companies Chosen

After inviting bids in June 2025, DMRC received proposals from four companies. However, after checking technical qualifications in August, only three firms were found to be eligible. The chosen firms are:

  • A.K. Infra Projects

  • Kalpataru Projects International

  • Texmaco Rail & Engineering

These companies have experience in handling large railway and metro electrification works. Their selection ensures that the job will be handled by firms with proven technical strength.

How the Process Works

Large metro projects like this follow a strict process:

  • Tender Invitation – DMRC announces the job and invites companies to submit proposals.

  • Bid Submission – Companies send in their technical and financial offers.

  • Technical Evaluation – DMRC checks if the company has the required experience, staff, and ability to complete the work.

  • Shortlisting – Only companies that pass the technical check are shortlisted.

  • Financial Bid Opening – The final stage involves comparing costs and choosing the company that offers the best deal while meeting all conditions.

Right now, the three shortlisted firms will move to the next stage, where their financial bids will be compared. Once the winning bidder is finalized, the contract will be officially awarded, and work will begin.

Scope of Work

The electrification project under D2E-12 includes several detailed tasks:

  • Designing the Overhead Equipment (OHE): Creating detailed engineering plans for the wires, poles, and support structures.

  • Supplying Materials: Bringing in all cables, fittings, poles, and equipment needed for electrification.

  • Installation: Setting up the OHE system on the tracks.

  • Testing: Running checks to ensure that the equipment works safely and reliably.

  • Commissioning: Officially putting the system into use so that trains can run on the new lines.

Specifically, the electrification will cover the elevated section from Saket G Block to Sangam Vihar on Line-10 and the stretch between Inderlok and Ashok Park Main on Line-5.

Why Electrification Matters

Electrification is one of the most important parts of metro construction. Without it, trains cannot move, no matter how well the tracks and stations are built. The OHE system carries high-voltage current from substations and delivers it to the trains through their pantographs (a device mounted on top of the train that touches the overhead wire).

The system must be designed very carefully because safety is the top priority. A strong and well-designed electrification system ensures:

  • Reliable service – fewer breakdowns and delays.

  • Safety – protection for passengers and workers.

  • Efficiency – smooth running of trains with less energy loss.

Impact on Delhi’s Transport

Delhi is one of the busiest cities in India, with millions of vehicles on its roads every day. Traffic jams, air pollution, and long travel times are daily challenges for people. Expanding the metro is seen as the best solution to these problems.

  • For Commuters: The new lines will save time and give a dependable alternative to buses and cars.

  • For the City: With more people choosing the metro, there will be less traffic congestion and reduced pollution.

  • For the Economy: Metro projects create jobs during construction and improve business activity once completed, as people can travel faster and more conveniently.

Timeline and Challenges

The firms will have three years to complete the electrification work. However, large projects often face challenges such as:

  • Land acquisition issues.

  • Delays in the supply of materials.

  • Technical difficulties during installation.

  • Weather conditions are slowing down outdoor work.

DMRC will have to closely monitor the progress to make sure deadlines are met. Timely completion is very important because delays can increase costs and affect the larger Phase-4 schedule.

Phase 4 of the Delhi Metro includes several new corridors and extensions across the city. Once completed, it will add over 100 kilometers of new routes, connecting more parts of Delhi and nearby regions.

The awarding of Contract D2E-12 is one of many steps needed to finish this expansion. With three strong companies now shortlisted, the project is expected to move ahead smoothly.

For lakhs of Delhi residents, this electrification contract may sound like just another technical job. But in reality, it is the key to making new metro routes come alive. Without electrification, the lines remain silent and unused. With it, trains can finally run, carrying people to work, schools, markets, and homes every day.

The success of this contract will directly shape the travel experience of millions of passengers in the years to come.
