Swedish defence company Saab is talking with the Canadian government and Canadian aircraft maker Bombardier about building Saab’s Gripen fighter jets in Canada. This plan was reported by the Globe and Mail on Thursday.
According to Saab’s CEO Micael Johansson, if the deal is approved, about 10,000 new jobs could be created in Canada. These jobs would come from building the aircraft, supplying parts, and supporting the project.
Talks Expected to Continue During Royal Visit
Sweden’s King Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia will visit Canada from November 18 to 20. During this visit, both countries are expected to continue their discussions about the Gripen project. The talks will focus on how the fighter jets can be built in Canada and how both countries can benefit.
Bombardier Shows Interest
In an email statement, Bombardier said it is open to working on the Gripen program. The company said it is ready to share its local knowledge if the Canadian government chooses Saab’s plan. This means Bombardier would help design, build, or support the fighter jets inside Canada.
Global Demand for Gripen Jets Growing
This discussion comes at a time when many countries are looking for new fighter jets. Recently, Sweden and Ukraine have been discussing a major deal that may allow Ukraine to buy up to 150 Gripen E jets. Sweden’s defence minister said these talks are making good progress.
If both deals move forward, Saab could see one of its biggest international projects.
Why Canada May Choose Gripen
Experts say that Canada is looking for fighter jets that are:
modern
affordable
easy to maintain
good for long-term use
The Gripen jet is known for being cost-effective and strong in cold weather, which fits Canada’s climate. Building the jets inside Canada would also help the local economy.
What Happens Next
For now, the final decision lies with the Government of Canada. The talks will continue, especially during the Swedish royal visit. If approved, this project could bring major industrial growth, new jobs, and a strong partnership between Sweden and Canada.
