India is about to witness a major leap in rail travel as the country prepares to introduce its first-ever bullet train between Mumbai and Ahmedabad. Talks on this long-awaited Shinkansen high-speed rail service are on the agenda this week as Prime Minister Narendra Modi visits Japan. During his visit, he is expected to meet Indian drivers undergoing training in Japan to operate these advanced trains.
The MAHSR Project: From Planning to Reality
The Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail (MAHSR) project was officially launched in September 2017 when Prime Minister Modi and then Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe laid the foundation stone at Sabarmati, Gujarat. The project came after four years of detailed feasibility studies conducted by Indian Railways in collaboration with Japan’s International Cooperation Agency.
In 2019, India and Japan signed a Memorandum of Understanding, with Japan agreeing to fund 80% of the project through a soft loan. Despite delays in the following years, construction has now picked up speed. The first section of the high-speed corridor is expected to open in Gujarat by 2027, while the full 508 km route is planned to be operational by 2028. Once running, the bullet train will complete the journey between Mumbai and Ahmedabad in just two hours and seven minutes.
Exploring Other High-Speed Rail Projects
During his visit to Japan, Prime Minister Modi and Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba are expected to discuss other potential high-speed rail projects in India. Back in 2009, five additional corridors were shortlisted, including Pune to Ahmedabad and Delhi to Amritsar via Chandigarh, signaling India’s ambition to expand its high-speed rail network across the country.
What Are Bullet Trains?
Bullet trains are high-speed trains that run on dedicated tracks at speeds exceeding 250 kilometers per hour. Countries like France, China, South Korea, Spain, Germany, Italy, Turkey, the Netherlands, and Belgium have already implemented such high-speed rail networks. India’s bullet train will follow a similar model, offering a modern and fast travel experience.
E10 Shinkansen Series: India’s Next-Gen Bullet Train
Initially, India planned to purchase the E5 Shinkansen series from Japan. However, due to technological advances and project delays, Japan offered India the next-generation E10 Shinkansen series. Inspired by the cherry blossom (sakura), the E10 series comes with several safety and comfort upgrades.
The most notable feature is that the train is earthquake-proof. It has L-shaped vehicle guides to prevent derailment during a quake and lateral dampers to reduce shaking and potential damage. The E10 also has redesigned engines, more luggage space, flexible seating plans for passengers or cargo, and dedicated window seats for wheelchair users.
Speed, Safety, and Comfort
The E10 is designed by the East Japan Railway Company and has a maximum speed of 320 km per hour, similar to the E5 series. Its electronically limited top speed ensures safety, but the train is capable of running at 360 km per hour. Advanced brakes reduce stopping distance by 15%, allowing the train to halt from its top speed in just 3.4 kilometers, which is crucial for India’s densely populated and seismically active areas.
The train’s interiors feature wider seats, a business-class section with leather recliners, built-in desks, onboard Wi-Fi, and a forest green color scheme. These upgrades aim to provide passengers with a comfortable and secure travel experience.
Timeline and Interim Arrangements
The E10 series is expected to become operational in Japan by 2030. Meanwhile, India will initially use interim E5 and E3 trains for the Mumbai-Ahmedabad route when service begins in 2027. During his visit, Prime Minister Modi will also tour the factory where the E10 is being developed, allowing India to observe the latest advancements in bullet train technology firsthand.
‘Make in India’ and Japan-India Cooperation
Prime Minister Modi also used his first address in Japan to promote India as a prime manufacturing destination for Japanese businesses. He highlighted that Japan has already invested over $40 billion in India across sectors ranging from semiconductors to start-ups. Reports suggest that Japan plans to invest 10 trillion Yen ($68 billion) over the next decade in India, with a focus on artificial intelligence, environment, medicine, and other key industries.
The Future of High-Speed Travel in India
The Mumbai-Ahmedabad bullet train marks the beginning of a new era in Indian transportation. Once operational, it will not only reduce travel time dramatically but also set a benchmark for modern rail infrastructure, safety, and passenger comfort. With Japan’s technological expertise and India’s growing focus on high-speed connectivity, bullet trains could soon become a common feature across major Indian cities.
From reducing travel times to enhancing passenger safety and comfort, the bullet train is set to revolutionize rail travel in India. The project also highlights the strong partnership between India and Japan and reflects India’s commitment to modern, sustainable, and efficient transport solutions.
