Mizoram’s First Railway Line Inaugurated After 172 Years

Mizoram, one of the northeastern states of India, witnessed a historic moment on September 13, 2025. Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the state’s very first railway line, the Bairabi–Sairang corridor. This event marked a milestone in the state’s development, as Mizoram finally became part of the Indian Railways network, 172 years after the railway system was introduced in India.

For decades, Mizoram remained disconnected from the national railway system due to its hilly terrain, dense forests, and challenging geography. The introduction of the railway line is not only a major achievement in transportation but also a symbol of integration and progress for the state and its people.

About the Bairabi–Sairang Railway Line

The Bairabi–Sairang railway line stretches for 51.38 kilometers, running through the scenic but challenging landscape of Mizoram. The construction of this line required enormous effort, investment, and engineering skills. The total cost of the project was approximately ₹8,071 crore.

The railway line is a remarkable feat of engineering. It includes 48 tunnels and more than 150 bridges to overcome the hilly terrain and deep valleys. Among these structures, Bridge No. 196 stands out as one of the most impressive. This bridge reaches a height of 104 meters, making it the second-highest railway bridge in Northeast India and taller than the Qutub Minar in Delhi.

This ambitious project not only demonstrates modern engineering skills but also highlights the determination to connect remote and difficult areas to the rest of the country.

Engineering Challenges

Constructing a railway line in Mizoram was far from easy. The region is known for its steep hills, deep gorges, and heavy rainfall, which pose serious challenges to workers and engineers. Every section of the railway required careful planning, including stabilizing slopes, constructing strong bridges, and designing tunnels that could safely pass through mountains.

Train Services and Connectivity

The inauguration of the railway line was accompanied by the launch of the state’s first Rajdhani Express. This train connects Sairang, near Aizawl, to Delhi’s Anand Vihar Terminal. The Rajdhani Express is one of the fastest and most prestigious train services in India, offering comfortable and swift travel between Mizoram and the national capital.

The Rajdhani Express service from Sairang to Delhi began on September 19, 2025. This was the first new Rajdhani Express to be launched in six years, highlighting the importance of this connection.

In addition to the Rajdhani Express, two more express trains were introduced to improve connectivity. One is the Aizawl–Guwahati Express, which links Mizoram to Assam and the rest of the northeastern states. The second is the Aizawl–Kolkata Express, connecting the state to the eastern metropolitan city of Kolkata. These trains will make it easier for people to travel for business, education, healthcare, and tourism.

Economic Benefits

The arrival of the railway line is expected to transform Mizoram’s economy. Easier transportation will allow local businesses to move goods more efficiently. Farmers and traders can transport products like crops, handicrafts, and handloom items to markets in other states.
