LG Manoj Sinha Launches Dedicated Parcel Train from Budgam to Delhi

On Monday, September 15, 2025, Jammu and Kashmir's Lieutenant Governor, Manoj Sinha, inaugurated a dedicated parcel train service from Budgam to Adarsh Nagar, Delhi. This initiative aims to streamline the transportation of Kashmir's renowned apples and other perishable goods, ensuring timely delivery to major markets across India.

A Lifeline for Apple Growers

Kashmir's horticulture sector, particularly apple cultivation, is a significant contributor to the region's economy. However, frequent disruptions, such as landslides and road blockages on the Srinagar–Jammu highway, have historically hindered the timely transportation of produce. These challenges often led to substantial losses for farmers, with apples perishing before reaching markets.

The newly launched parcel train service addresses this issue by providing a reliable and efficient alternative. Each train is equipped with eight parcel van coaches, each having a capacity to carry 23 tonnes of goods. This service is expected to transport approximately 23–24 tonnes of apples and other perishable items daily from Budgam to Delhi, reaching its destination the following day.

Statements from Officials

Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha expressed his gratitude towards Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Indian Railways for their support in launching this service. He emphasized that the initiative would not only reduce transportation costs but also enhance connectivity between Jammu and Kashmir and the rest of the country. "This will boost our economy," he remarked, highlighting the significance of the project for local farmers.

Divisional Railway Manager (DRM) Vivek Kumar termed the launch as a "historic achievement," reflecting Indian Railways' commitment to nation-building. Senior Divisional Commercial Manager Uchit Singhal added that the new Budgam–Adarsh Nagar service is set to "revolutionize freight transportation and give a major boost to trade and industry in the region."

Economic Implications

Horticulture is the mainstay of Kashmir’s economy, with over seven lakh families directly and indirectly associated with the sector. The introduction of this dedicated parcel train service is expected to bolster the local economy by providing a cost-effective and timely transportation solution for perishable goods. Farmers can now access broader markets, potentially increasing their income opportunities and contributing to the overall economic development of the region.

Addressing Transportation Challenges

The frequent closure of the Srinagar–Jammu National Highway due to adverse weather conditions and landslides has been a persistent challenge for the transportation of goods. These disruptions often resulted in the spoilage of perishable items, especially during peak harvest seasons. The new rail service mitigates these risks by providing a stable and uninterrupted mode of transport, ensuring that produce reaches markets in optimal condition.

The successful launch of the Budgam to Delhi parcel train service marks a significant milestone in enhancing the logistics infrastructure of Jammu and Kashmir. It is anticipated that this initiative will pave the way for similar projects in other regions, further strengthening the transportation network and supporting the agricultural community.
