A Major Step for Leonardo’s AW09 Program

Leonardo has marked a significant milestone in the development of its AW09 next-generation single-engine helicopter, as the first serial-production representative aircraft completed a successful test flight near Milan, Italy. The event demonstrates that the program, originally conceived by Swiss manufacturer Kopter before its 2020 acquisition by Leonardo, is advancing steadily toward certification and customer deliveries.

The AW09 is positioned as Leonardo’s answer to the light single-engine utility market, competing with established models such as the Airbus H125 and Bell 407. Its first serial-production representative flight signals the shift from prototype validation to real-world readiness.

From Swiss Roots to Italian Flightline

The AW09 began life as the Kopter SH09, a Swiss-developed helicopter designed to bring more efficiency, payload, and cabin space to the light utility segment. When Leonardo acquired Kopter in 2020, it brought the program under its expanding rotorcraft portfolio, pledging to integrate advanced Italian engineering and global support.

While earlier prototypes have flown in Switzerland, moving the program’s test activity to Italy—near Leonardo’s Vergiate facility outside Milan—underscores the shift toward serial production. This test vehicle reflects the configuration expected for final customer deliveries.

Design Features That Set the AW09 Apart

Leonardo is pitching the AW09 as a “new generation” single-engine helicopter, promising operational flexibility, advanced avionics, and lower operating costs. Key highlights include:

  • A five-blade bearingless main rotor system designed for reduced vibration and noise.
  • A high-set tail boom with shrouded tail rotor for safety in confined-area operations.
  • A spacious, modular cabin capable of seating up to eight passengers or customized for roles like EMS, surveillance, or VIP transport.
  • A Garmin G3000H integrated avionics suite, giving pilots advanced situational awareness and reducing workload.

These features aim to make the AW09 attractive to operators in both commercial utility and private/VIP markets.

Test Flight: Proof of Progress

The flight near Milan was not just symbolic but also technical, marking the validation of production-representative systems. Leonardo engineers confirmed the test included checks of flight handling, avionics integration, and systems reliability.

Industry watchers note that the AW09’s progress has been closely followed since the transition from Kopter to Leonardo. The successful flight gives credibility to Leonardo’s timeline, which aims to achieve certification by 2026.

Market Positioning and Competition

The AW09 will face stiff competition from the Airbus H125, which dominates the single-engine market with its reliability and versatility, and the Bell 407GXi, valued for its ruggedness and cost-efficiency.

Leonardo is betting that the AW09’s larger cabin volume, modern cockpit, and higher payload capacity will allow it to carve out a niche among operators seeking more flexibility in a single-engine platform. The helicopter is also being pitched as cost-effective, with fuel efficiency and lower direct operating costs than some competitors.

What Comes Next

With its first serial-production representative in the air, Leonardo is now focused on completing a comprehensive flight-test campaign leading toward certification. The next steps include:

  • Expanding flight envelope tests.
  • Demonstrating mission configurations (EMS, VIP, utility).
  • Coordinating with regulators for certification pathways in Europe and the U.S.
  • Preparing production capacity at Leonardo’s facilities for future customer demand.

The AW09 program has already attracted attention from prospective customers, including leasing companies and helicopter service providers in Europe, the Middle East, and Asia.

Expert Reactions

Aviation analysts view the AW09’s progress as a vote of confidence in Leonardo’s strategy of broadening its rotorcraft offering. Richard Aboulafia, aerospace analyst at AeroDynamic Advisory, noted that the AW09 represents Leonardo’s “push into the highly competitive but lucrative light single-engine space”, an area it previously lacked presence in.

Operators have expressed interest in the helicopter’s cabin size, which is notably larger than traditional single-engine competitors. This could give Leonardo an advantage in passenger comfort and mission flexibility.

A New Chapter for Leonardo Rotorcraft

The AW09’s first flight in serial-production form near Milan is more than a test milestone; it’s a signal that Leonardo is serious about competing in a segment long dominated by Airbus and Bell. While challenges remain in certification and market adoption, the AW09’s innovative design and backing by a major aerospace group place it in a strong position to disrupt the light utility helicopter market.

As the program heads toward certification in the coming years, all eyes will be on whether the AW09 can deliver on its promise: a next-generation, efficient, and versatile single-engine helicopter for a wide range of operators.
