India’s maritime sector has achieved a significant milestone as Deendayal Port Authority (Kandla) successfully executed its first-ever triple banking ship-to-ship operation at a strong tidal port. This complex maneuver, involving the simultaneous coordination of three vessels, marks a defining moment not just for the port but for the country’s evolving logistics capabilities. In an era where speed and efficiency dictate global trade competitiveness, this achievement places Kandla firmly among the most operationally advanced ports in the region.

The operation involved a Capesize vessel, a transshipment vessel, and a Panamax vessel working in perfect synchronization—a rare and technically demanding configuration. In a single coordinated sequence, approximately 1,17,000 tonnes of cargo were transferred from the Capesize vessel to the transshipment vessel, followed by a tandem transfer of around 77,000 tonnes to the Panamax vessel. Managing such a large-scale cargo movement in one integrated operation reflects a high level of precision, planning, and real-time execution.

What makes this achievement even more remarkable is the challenging tidal environment of Kandla. As a tidal port, water levels fluctuate significantly, limiting operational windows and increasing the complexity of vessel positioning and cargo transfer. Conducting a triple banking operation under such conditions requires exceptional coordination between marine pilots, tug operators, and onboard crews. The success of this maneuver demonstrates the port’s ability to handle high-risk, high-precision operations without compromising safety or efficiency.

Beyond its technical complexity, the operation delivers tangible benefits in terms of efficiency. By enabling simultaneous cargo transfer between multiple vessels, the port significantly reduces turnaround time and minimizes vessel waiting periods. This capability is particularly crucial during periods of high traffic, allowing ports to handle larger volumes without expanding physical infrastructure. In a competitive global shipping environment, such efficiency gains translate directly into cost savings and improved service reliability.

Deendayal Port, one of India’s largest cargo-handling ports, plays a critical role in supporting bulk commodity trade, including crude oil, fertilizers, and industrial materials. The successful execution of a triple banking operation enhances its capacity to manage surge cargo volumes and complex logistics scenarios. It also strengthens India’s position as a reliable trade partner, capable of handling large-scale maritime operations with global standards of precision and safety.

This milestone is more than a one-time achievement, it represents a shift toward more advanced, technology-driven port operations. As global trade becomes more dynamic and unpredictable, ports will increasingly rely on such high-efficiency techniques to maintain throughput and resilience. Kandla’s success could serve as a model for other ports in India and beyond, encouraging the adoption of similar strategies to maximize operational capacity.

The triple banking ship-to-ship operation at Kandla is a powerful reminder that innovation in maritime logistics is not just about infrastructure expansion. It is about smarter execution. By pushing the boundaries of what is operationally possible, Deendayal Port has set a new benchmark for efficiency, coordination, and capability. As global trade continues to evolve, such breakthroughs will play a crucial role in shaping the future of port operations, where precision and performance define success.
