India’s logistics and warehousing sector is witnessing a major expansion as it prepares to handle a surge in e-commerce activity during the upcoming festive season. Experts estimate that e-commerce sales are likely to grow by 25% this year compared to last year. At the same time, the demand for warehousing space is projected to rise sharply by 40%, reflecting the increased need for storage and fast delivery services during the festive rush.
The industry is not only expanding its infrastructure but also creating thousands of temporary jobs. Over 360,000 seasonal positions are being offered in supply chain operations, with nearly two-thirds of these roles coming from a single leading e-commerce platform. These jobs include warehouse staff, delivery personnel, drivers, and temporary support staff to ensure smooth operations across the country.
Expansion of Warehousing Across India
India’s total warehousing stock has now crossed 500 million square feet, and the sector is growing rapidly to meet demand in smaller cities. More than 640 new delivery hubs are being set up in tier-II and tier-III cities to make last-mile deliveries faster and more efficient.
Industry experts say that the festive logistics approach has changed significantly over the years. Earlier, companies focused on one-time stocking of warehouses before the festival season. Now, the focus has shifted to high-frequency and seamless deliveries, where products move quickly from warehouses to multiple delivery points across cities. This new approach ensures that customers receive their orders on time, even during peak shopping periods.
Technology and Flexible Warehousing Solutions
To manage the huge seasonal demand, companies are increasingly adopting technology-driven and flexible warehousing strategies. These strategies allow businesses to adjust stock levels and operations in real-time based on demand.
Welspun One, for instance, is expanding its storage capacity in key consumption hubs. The company uses advanced technology to track stock levels and ensure products are available when needed. This data-driven approach helps reduce delays and ensures efficient delivery.
TVS ILP is focusing on scalable Grade-A warehouse parks, which can expand during peak seasons. These parks are equipped with extra power capacity to support conveyor belts, forklifts, and delivery trailers, enabling faster handling of large volumes of goods.
Such flexible and tech-enabled warehousing ensures that logistics companies can quickly respond to sudden spikes in orders, a common trend during the festive period.
Mahindra Logistics Expands Operations
Mahindra Logistics Ltd is stepping up its festive season preparations with a series of strategic expansions:
Adding 0.8 million square feet of temporary warehouse space to handle extra stock.
Launching 50 new delivery stations to reach more customers efficiently.
Expanding services to 500 additional pin codes, enabling delivery in smaller towns and semi-urban areas.
Hiring 10,000 extra workers, including drivers, warehouse staff, and support personnel, to ensure orders are processed and delivered on time.
These measures are designed to prevent delays and bottlenecks in the supply chain during the festival rush, which can last several weeks.
Early Signs of Festive Season Growth
Even before the main festive season begins, e-commerce platforms are witnessing a noticeable increase in demand. For example, Unicommerce, an e-commerce support platform, reported:
A 24% rise in order volumes compared to last year during pre-Rakshabandhan sales.
A 27% increase in gross merchandise value, indicating that customers are buying more expensive or higher volumes of products.
These early signs suggest that this festive season could be one of the busiest ever for India’s e-commerce and logistics sectors.
Preparing for the Road Ahead
With strong consumer demand, expanding infrastructure, and tech-enabled supply chains, India’s logistics industry is gearing up for one of the most challenging and busiest festive seasons in its history. Companies are combining more warehouses, delivery hubs, temporary staff, and advanced technology to ensure smooth operations.
Industry leaders highlight that the festive season is no longer just about storing goods in warehouses. It is now a matter of speed, accuracy, and efficiency. Companies are investing heavily in temporary and flexible solutions to meet the surge in online shopping and to ensure that customers receive their orders on time.
This preparation is particularly important as customers increasingly expect fast deliveries, real-time tracking, and a seamless shopping experience during festivals. The use of technology, such as data analytics, smart warehouse management systems, and automation, is making this possible for logistics companies across India.
India’s logistics and warehousing sector is preparing for a record festive season. Warehousing space is expanding beyond 500 million square feet, temporary jobs are being created for hundreds of thousands of people, and e-commerce companies are ramping up deliveries across cities.
With technology-driven operations, scalable warehouses, and more delivery hubs in tier-II and tier-III cities, the logistics industry is ready to handle the festive season efficiently. Consumers can expect timely deliveries, better service, and smooth online shopping experiences, while companies work hard to meet the unprecedented surge in demand.
