A Green Revolution on Tracks
In a groundbreaking move towards sustainable energy, Banaras Locomotive Works (BLW) in Varanasi has unveiled India's first removable solar panel system installed between active railway tracks. This innovative project, inaugurated on August 15, 2025, marks a significant milestone in Indian Railways' commitment to renewable energy and environmental sustainability.
The Vision Behind the Innovation
Indian Railways, one of the world's largest rail networks, has been actively pursuing green initiatives to reduce its carbon footprint and achieve net-zero emissions by 2030. The removable solar panel system is a testament to this vision, utilizing underutilized track space to generate clean energy without the need for additional land acquisition.
Technical Specifications and Design
The pilot project spans 70 meters along Line No. 19 of the BLW workshop and comprises 28 bifacial monocrystalline solar panels. Each panel measures 2278 × 1133 × 30 mm and weighs 31.83 kg. Equipped with 144 half-cut PERC bifacial cells and an IP68 junction box, the system delivers a total capacity of 15 kWp, generating approximately 880 units of electricity per kilometer daily. The panels are mounted on concrete sleepers using rubber pads and epoxy adhesives, ensuring stability and durability.
Portability and Maintenance
One of the standout features of this installation is its portability. The panels are designed to be easily removable, allowing for routine track maintenance without disrupting train operations. Each panel can be detached using just four stainless steel Allen bolts, facilitating quick and efficient servicing.
Environmental and Operational Impact
The removable solar panel system is expected to generate an estimated 3.21 lakh units of electricity per kilometer annually. This substantial energy output contributes to reducing reliance on fossil fuels and lowering greenhouse gas emissions. Moreover, the system's design optimizes space utilization, making it a viable solution for land-constrained urban areas.
Scalability and Future Prospects
Given the vast expanse of Indian Railways' 1.2 lakh km track network, the removable solar panel system holds immense potential for widespread adoption. The technology can be deployed across yard lines and other underutilized track areas, significantly enhancing the railways' renewable energy capacity. This scalability aligns with Indian Railways' broader strategy to integrate sustainable practices into its operations
Indigenous Innovation and Engineering Excellence
The development and implementation of the removable solar panel system showcase India's growing capabilities in indigenous engineering and innovation. The project was executed entirely in-house by the BLW team, highlighting the nation's commitment to self-reliance and technological advancement.
Integration with Existing Infrastructure
The removable solar panel system complements existing rooftop solar installations at BLW, further bolstering the facility's green energy generation capacity. This integrated approach underscores the importance of a holistic strategy in achieving sustainability goals.
Challenges and Solutions
Implementing the removable solar panel system presented several challenges, including ensuring panel stability amidst vibrations from passing trains and facilitating easy maintenance. These challenges were addressed through innovative solutions such as the use of rubber mounting pads to absorb vibrations and epoxy adhesives for secure panel attachment. The design also incorporates features that allow for easy cleaning and quick removal, ensuring the system's longevity and efficiency.
Community and Stakeholder Engagement
The success of the removable solar panel system is a result of collaborative efforts among various stakeholders, including the BLW team, Indian Railways, and local communities. Engaging stakeholders throughout the project's development ensured that the system met operational requirements and garnered support for its implementation.
Policy Support and Government Initiatives
The Indian government's commitment to renewable energy and sustainable development has been instrumental in the realization of the removable solar panel system. Policies supporting green initiatives and providing incentives for renewable energy projects have created an enabling environment for such innovations to flourish.
Broader Implications for India's Energy Landscape
The introduction of removable solar panels between railway tracks signifies a paradigm shift in India's approach to energy generation and infrastructure development. By harnessing underutilized spaces for renewable energy production, the country is making significant strides towards achieving its climate goals and ensuring energy security.
Lessons Learned and Best Practices
The successful implementation of the removable solar panel system offers valuable lessons in innovation, collaboration, and sustainable development. Key takeaways include the importance of interdisciplinary teamwork, the need for adaptable and scalable solutions, and the benefits of leveraging indigenous knowledge and resources.
A Model for Sustainable Infrastructure
The removable solar panel system at BLW Varanasi stands as a beacon of India's commitment to sustainable infrastructure and renewable energy. As Indian Railways continues to explore and implement innovative solutions, this project serves as a model for integrating green technologies into transportation networks, paving the way for a more sustainable and resilient future.
