New Delhi: India is getting ready to make a big change in how people travel. NITI Aayog, the country's top planning body, has released an important new report that could help India become a leader in electric vehicles (EVs). The report is called “Unlocking a $200 Billion Opportunity: Electric Vehicles in India.”
This new report was launched in New Delhi by Rajiv Gauba, Member of NITI Aayog. Other top leaders were also present, including CEO BVR Subrahmanyam, Secretary Kamran Rizvi from the Ministry of Heavy Industries, and Sudhendu Sinha, Programme Director (E-Mobility).
The report shows a clear path for India to reach its big goal: 30% of all new vehicle sales in India should be electric by the year 2030. Right now, India is growing in this field, but slowly. The report looks at problems India is facing and gives simple and smart solutions to fix them.
It also explains what the government, companies, and people need to do together to make this electric future happen.
Electric vehicles are better for the environment. They produce less pollution than vehicles that run on petrol or diesel. Using EVs will help India lower air pollution, fight climate change, and reduce oil imports from other countries.
In 2016, only 50,000 EVs were sold in India. By 2024, this number jumped to over 2.08 million EVs. That’s a big improvement! But compared to the world, India is still behind. Globally, EV sales grew from 918,000 in 2016 to 18.78 million in 2024. India is trying hard to catch up, and this report is a big step in that direction.
The report clearly explains what is stopping India from reaching its EV goals. Some of the major problems include:
High price of EVs compared to regular vehicles
Lack of charging stations in many areas
Not enough EV options for all users (like trucks, buses, or two-wheelers)
Battery costs and supply issues
The report offers many smart ideas to solve these problems. These include:
Making EVs cheaper by giving people tax benefits and special government support
Building more charging stations across cities and highways
Supporting Indian companies to make EV parts, like batteries and motors, inside the country
Encouraging businesses and investors to help grow the EV sector
Working closely with all industries and government offices for better teamwork
The report also says that data and technology should be used to make better and faster decisions.
Rajiv Gauba, who launched the report, said, “India is ready to change how people move. This report gives us good ideas to solve problems and grow quickly.”
CEO BVR Subrahmanyam said, “NITI Aayog has been working hard to support EVs in India. This new report comes at the right time and gives us strong steps to follow.”
This report is very important because it gives a full picture of what India needs to do next. It also shows that if India acts fast, it can unlock a $200 billion business opportunity. That means India’s economy can grow while also becoming cleaner and greener.
This will also help create new jobs, support local manufacturing, and improve the lives of people across the country.
India is standing at a turning point. The new EV report by NITI Aayog is more than just a book — it is a roadmap to a better future. It helps us understand the challenges, and more importantly, it gives us smart ways to move past them.
The full report is now available on the NITI Aayog website. It will be helpful for policy makers, business leaders, and young innovators who want to build India’s green future.
As the world moves towards clean energy, India’s electric journey is just getting started — and this report is driving it in the right direction.
