Impeachment Move Targets Philippine President Marcos Amid Claims of Trust Breach

Post by : Saif

A fresh political controversy has shaken the Philippines after a lawyer filed an impeachment complaint against President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. The complaint raises serious questions about public trust, leadership, and how the government has handled major national issues.

The impeachment filing was submitted on Monday by lawyer Andre De Jesus. At the center of the complaint is President Marcos’ role in allowing former President Rodrigo Duterte to be arrested and sent to The Hague. Duterte now faces trial at the International Criminal Court over thousands of deaths linked to his war on drugs. The lawyer described this action as a form of “kidnapping,” echoing claims made by Duterte’s family.

Rodrigo Duterte served as president from 2016 to 2022. His drug war was widely criticized by human rights groups, who say it led to widespread abuses. His arrest in March has divided the country, with supporters calling it illegal and critics saying it is a step toward justice.

The complaint also accuses President Marcos of breaking constitutional rules related to government spending. It claims there were irregularities in the national budget and that the president failed to act against alleged corruption tied to flood control projects. These projects are meant to protect communities, and any misuse of funds could have serious consequences for public safety.

In addition, the complaint says President Marcos did not properly respond to allegations about drug use. According to the lawyer, the lack of clear answers has raised concerns about the president’s ability to govern responsibly. De Jesus said the impeachment process would give the Filipino people a chance to openly discuss these unanswered issues.

The president’s office reacted calmly, saying it respects the democratic process. In a statement, the presidential communications office said it trusts Congress to handle the matter fairly and according to the law. It also said President Marcos will continue to perform his duties and ensure that government services continue without disruption.

This development follows earlier political drama involving Vice President Sara Duterte, the daughter of Rodrigo Duterte. She was impeached by the lower house last year, but the Supreme Court later dismissed the case for violating constitutional rules. Her strained relationship with President Marcos has added to political tensions.

Although Marcos’ cousin Martin Romualdez has stepped down as House Speaker after being linked to a corruption scandal, the lower house remains largely controlled by lawmakers loyal to the president. This has led many to doubt whether the impeachment complaint will gain enough support to move forward.

President Marcos was elected in 2022 and is serving a single six-year term. He is not allowed to run again in 2028, leaving him with about two years left in office. Meanwhile, Vice President Sara Duterte is widely viewed as a strong contender for the next presidential election.

The impeachment complaint reflects deep divisions in Philippine politics. Whether it succeeds or not, it has once again brought questions of accountability, leadership, and the rule of law into the national spotlight.
