Haryana is on the move to make public transport not only smarter but significantly safer. In a major statewide initiative, the government has announced that all public service vehicles, including state buses, private taxis, and commercial passenger vehicles, will soon be equipped with GPS-based Vehicle Location Tracking Devices (VLTDs).
This initiative isn’t just about tracking vehicles—it’s about creating a connected, responsive transport network where every ride is monitored in real time, and every passenger’s safety is a priority. The VLTDs, paired with emergency alert buttons, will provide immediate communication between passengers, drivers, and command centers in case of emergencies such as accidents, threats, or route deviations.
Integrated with the national Vehicle Location Tracking Platform, Haryana’s system will allow transport authorities to access live data, enforce compliance with approved routes, and detect unauthorized operators. With this digital layer, the state hopes to reduce violations, eliminate illegal services, and bring greater transparency to how public transport operates across its urban and rural networks.
But the benefits don’t stop at safety. Officials point out that real-time location data will also help in fleet management and route optimization, enabling authorities to better manage traffic flows, reduce idle time, and improve fuel efficiency. Future plans may include public-facing apps for passengers to track bus arrivals, check capacity, and plan commutes more efficiently.
This move also positions Haryana as a leading adopter of the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways’ national mandate requiring public transport vehicles to be digitally traceable. With implementation already in motion, the initiative is being viewed as a template for nationwide smart mobility rollouts—a mix of technology, policy, and public service working in tandem.
As Indian cities grow and transport demands surge, the focus on digitally enabled, safety-first transit systems becomes essential. Haryana’s new VLTD plan is a clear signal that the state is not waiting for the future of mobility—it’s building it now.
