In a landmark push for cleaner and more inclusive public transport, Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta today flagged off 100 new “Devi” electric buses, reinforcing the capital’s commitment to green mobility and gender-responsive urban transit.
These state-of-the-art low-floor, zero-emission electric buses are part of the broader Delhi government initiative to transition its public transport fleet away from fossil fuels and make city commuting safer and more comfortable, especially for women. The "Devi" buses, operated by the Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC), have been specially designed with women-centric features, including CCTV surveillance, panic buttons, GPS tracking, and real-time route monitoring systems.
Addressing the ceremony, CM Rekha Gupta emphasized that these buses symbolize both environmental responsibility and social empowerment. "Every ‘Devi’ bus is a step toward cleaner air, safer streets, and greater dignity for every citizen, especially women, who depend on public transport daily," she said.
The induction of these 100 electric buses takes Delhi’s total e-bus count to over 1,500—among the largest in any Indian city—and reflects the capital's role as a national leader in green urban transit. Officials noted that the new fleet will help eliminate thousands of tons of CO₂ emissions annually, improve service reliability, and reduce the city's dependency on diesel-run vehicles.
Equipped with low-entry steps, digital displays, automated fare systems, and wheelchair accessibility, the buses aim to redefine how public transport serves diverse commuters. Most importantly, with their silent operation and zero tailpipe emissions, the "Devi" fleet contributes to improving Delhi’s notoriously poor air quality.
The move is part of the city’s broader alignment with India’s National Electric Mobility Mission Plan (NEMMP) and the FAME II scheme, which incentivizes electric vehicle adoption through subsidies and infrastructure support.
Beyond the vehicles themselves, Delhi’s transport department has been scaling up charging infrastructure, adding new bus depots, and integrating these electric buses into app-based route tracking platforms to improve commuter experience and reduce wait times.
As urban populations grow and cities face mounting climate and congestion pressures, Delhi’s e-bus rollout—particularly with a gender-conscious branding like "Devi"—is being hailed as a model for progressive, inclusive, and sustainable urban mobility.
