London Chiltern Railways has signed a decade‑long lease to introduce modern push‑pull trainsets to its fleet, a move designed to expand capacity, improve punctuality, and offer a more comfortable passenger experience on its flagship routes linking London, Oxford, and Birmingham.

The agreement, concluded with a major rolling stock leasing company (ROSCO), marks one of the operator’s most significant fleet investments in recent years. Fully refurbished trainsets — fitted with updated interiors, Wi‑Fi, power sockets, and new seating — will begin entering service progressively over the next 18 months. Their push‑pull configuration, which allows trains to be driven from either end, will eliminate the need to reposition locomotives at terminal stations, cutting turnaround times and boosting operational efficiency.

The new trainsets are expected to allow the operator to run additional services, maintain high punctuality standards, and improve the overall passenger experience. “It is a direct response to what we are seeing in terms of ridership returning and, in some cases, growing beyond earlier forecasts,” Allan said.
